The tradition of tonsure is followed in all major religions of the world! And more
commonly among Hindus, starting from the time a baby is less than a year old…as
per a tradition called Kesha khandana or
Mundan.
Tonsuring is a common practice at most Hindu
Temples and at this ancient Temple of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, it is most prevalent. Countless devotees flock to this
highly revered temple every day to donate tonsured hair, against the fulfilment of their vows.
Every
month several thousand kgs of hair is collected and periodically auctioned by the
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam’s Management
Board.
The
e-auction is conducted for three grades of hair, including grey/white hair. The
hair is categorized into three grades on the basis of length. The first grade
of hair is 31 inches or above, the second grade is between 16 to 30 inches and the
third grade is between 10-15 inches.
The first-grade
black hair could fetch as much as Rs. 24,000/- per kg. The second-grade hair could fetch as much as Rs.
18,000/- per kg. And the third-grade hair
could fetch around Rs. 3,500/- per kg.
However, the price of grey/white hair is
much lower.
And
according to recent news, the sale of
hair at this temple has fetched over 140 Crores of Rupees!
