Thanks to the copious rains in Telangana during the current monsoon
season, the State’s rivers, lakes and dams are full. Hopefully, there will be no
drinking water shortage anywhere in the State in the ensuing year. One such
lake which is full is close to Hyderabad, it is the Ramappa Lake which we have
visited recently. This article is about
the lovely Ramappa Lake and its beautiful surroundings.
Ramappa Lake, locally known as Ramappa Cheruvu is a manmade
artificial lake situated in Palampet, it is the pride of Jayashankar
Bhupalpally district. The lake is just a km from the marvellous Ramappa Temple,
68 km from Warangal and about 230
km from Hyderabad. The Ramappa Lake is an excellent
irrigation scheme, belonging to the 13th century (1213 AD), built by the
Kakatiya ruler, Ganapathi Deva. The lake is beautifully located in the middle
of densely forested hills… it is surrounded by hills, forests and lush green
trees all around it. Tourists can enjoy their sojourn at this lake, at the
Haritha Lake View Resort - Ramappa, which offers excellent facilities for
accommodation and a modern restaurant serving various cuisines. There are A/C
and Non - A/C rooms for accommodating tourists.
The water from the lake is spread over an area of 190 square km
with Gross storage of 2912 Mcft. The earthen dam is 610 metres long. The Lake
irrigates 5180 hectares of fields in the neighbouring Mandals.
The Pump House that you see in the attached pictures, which is in
the Lake, stands out as an attraction. And if permitted one can walk up to the
Pump House.
When in Warangal or passing by that way, one should certainly visit
Ramappa Temple and Ramappa Lake and if possible stay at the Lake for a day!
