Today
is the festival of Raksha Bandhan. Warm Greetings and Good Wishes to all of you
on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan /Rakhi Purnima. This festival is observed in
the month of Sravan/Sravana Masam on the Full Moon day/Purnima/Pournami. This
photoblog post is to happily convey to you how we celebrated the festival
today.
Raksha
Bandhan in Sanskrit; literally means "The tie or knot of
protection". The word Raksha means
protection, while Bandhan is the verb to tie. It is an ancient Hindu festival
that ritually celebrates the love and duty between brothers and their sisters.
The sister performs a Rakhi ceremony, and then prays to express her love and
her wish for the wellbeing of her brother; in return, the brother ritually
pledges to protect and take care of his sister under all circumstances. It is
one of the several occasions in which family ties are affirmed not just among
Hindu families but in countless other Indian families, like among Sikhs and
Jains. Rakhi festival is not just among sisters and brothers it is an occasion
to celebrate brother-sister like family ties between cousins and distant family
members and friends.
In
these pictures, you can see my sister Smt. Hemalatha and my niece Kumari
Alekhya tying Rakhis.
