Here
is a glimpse of my humble ‘Autograph Collection’ of childhood. The above
autographs are of some prominent cricketers like Nawab of Pataudi, M.L.
Jaisimha, Abid Ali, Govind Raj, freedom fighters like Konda Laxman Bapuji,
Panuganti Pichaiah, scientist and author Mahidhara Nalini Mohan Rao, musicians
like Emani Shankara Sastry, M.L. Vasanta Kumari and dance artists like
Yedavalli Rama, Kamala Laxman and L. Vijayalaxmi.
For
a brief period of about five years in my childhood, I took interest in
collecting autographs. All the signatures were collected during my school
vacations when I visited my parents at Kothagudem. As my father was at the helm
of affairs in conducting the sports and cultural events in the town it was easy
for me to approach and seek autographs of all visiting Ranji Trophy cricket
players, other sportspersons, and artists of music and dance. Some of them may
not have been prominent performers on the national level but were visitors of
great importance to our town. Subsequently, in my youth, I became a shy person
and discontinued this hobby.
In
remembrance of the hobby and the good old days, I am presenting a few
autographs from my collection. I used to proudly show them off then, and after
so many years I am doing that once again!

Great collection...would really love to have the same in my collection

ReplyDeleteNamaste sir. I came across your blog post with the autograph of Panuganti Pichaiah garu MLA (1967-72). He was my great-grandfather. I’m trying to learn more about his life. Could I please contact you regarding this?
ReplyDeleteNamaste Madam, We lived in Kothagudem for many years. During that time, I had the privilege of meeting Sri Panuganti Pitchaiah Garu on a few occasions at his modest home in nearby Old Palvancha. I had approached him to obtain his signature, as an MLA, on the True Copies of my certificates and in my autograph book. This was around 1969–70, when I had just completed my 12th Class and was applying for admission to engineering colleges.
DeleteI still remember him vividly, a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi, dressed in Gandhian simplicity (exactly). A gentle, fragile man who led a life of humility and restraint. Sadly, I do not have further details about him.
May I ask if you have any contacts in Palvancha or Kothagudem? Though I moved away from Kothagudem long ago, I am still in touch with a few people there. Any information or clues you can share might help me gather more about Sri Pitchaiah Garu.
