Here is a rare dish from the past. Prepared rarely… at the most
once in a year. It goes well with hot rice and ghee. It is ‘Regi Pandla Pachadi’ (Indian
Jujube Fruit Chutney). Long ago, Regi Pallu were popular among children as
these fruit trees were available everywhere and children relished the
fruits. But now many varieties of fruits
from all over the country and some from abroad are easily available everywhere and
Regi Pallu are almost forgotten. However, they are available in the market only
during the just concluded Sankranti festival, exclusively for the Bhogi Pandla
ceremony. These fruits carry a great significance in the Bhogi Pandla ceremony.
During the ceremony, they are rolled over the heads and shoulders of children
along with chunks of sugarcane, flowers and other accompaniments by the mother
and other ladies in the family as an overall blessing for the children… to ward
off evil and to enhance their health and wisdom.
And the copious availability of the fruit this week tempted us to
make this chutney after a very long time. Some family members have tasted it
for the first time today and said it was OK, not great.
Very true, tastes change over time and as a result, some recipes
vanish.
