Lucky Number 9!?

Number 9 is considered a very powerful and lucky number by many communities around the world. It is considered thrice sacred and is believed to represent perfection; balance and order. Here at Hyderabad; people are crazy about it. Though any number with all 9s is popular, what is said to be more important is that the Digital root of a number has to be 9, to get all the astrological, numerological, magical and mysterious benefits!?  We get the Digital root of any number by adding up all the digits of the number until there is only one number left. And any such figure resulting in a Digital root of 9 is most sought after especially for a vehicle registration number. My son, Srikanth’s car number as you can see in the above photograph is AP9 BN 9756. To get the Digital root of this number we have to add 9+7+5+6=27 and then 2+7 is 9. Or we can add the 9 of AP9 BN also; with 9756 and still get a Digital root of 9, 9+9+7+5+6=36, 3+6=9. My son luckily did not have to pay any extra amount to get this registration number but many people are willing to pay an incredible price for a registration number with all 9s or a digital root of 9. Just a fortnight back when the Khairatabad Transport Office auctioned the registration number AP9 CA 9999, a gentleman bid Rs. 9.6 Lakhs! and won the number for his BMW car. Earlier, the highest price paid at an auction for a similar 9s number plate was Rs. 6.51 Lakhs. Winning such a number is to be on cloud nine!

First of all, 9 is significant as the highest value single-digit number. And as I wrote earlier, people of even today believe that it represents perfection, balance and order and consider it thrice sacred. In many ancient civilizations and religious ceremonies, number 9 was considered auspicious, benevolent and lucky. Customs and traditions involving 9 are followed even today. Among Hindus, there are many religious ceremonies involving 9 days of worship and called as Navarathri puja. I understand that similarly 9th day (after a baby’s birth) or 9 days of celebrations have significance in various communities of the world. And in Numerology, the positive characteristics of No. 9 are selfless, fulfilment, completion, universality, universal understanding, interrelatedness, compassion, idealism, tolerance, forgiveness, generosity, benevolence, humanitarianism, emotionalism and justice.

There are many fascinating mathematical equations involving 9:

When any number is multiplied by 9, the sum of the digits so obtained will be equal to 9. For example, 7 times 9 is 63, 6+3=9, 17 times 9 is 153, 1+5+3=9 and 648 times 9 is 5832, 5+8+3+2=18, 1+8=9.

When you mix up two digits in any number, the sum of the digits of the difference between the number and the mixed up number always equals 9. For example, 345, mixed up is 543, the difference between these two is 198 that is 1+9+8=18, 1+8=9. Similarly, in 2468, with any two numbers mixed up is 4268, the difference between these two is 1800 that is 1+8+0+0=18, 1+8=9.

Choose any number, add up the digits and then subtract the value you got from the number you choose, the result will always be 9. For example, let us choose the number 62, added up it is 6+2=8, this we subtract from 62, 62-8=54, 5+4=9. Similarly, if we choose 43658, the added up value would be 4+3+6+5+8=26, we then subtract, 43658-26=43632, that is 4+3+6+3+2=18, 1+8=9.

Another interesting calculation with 9 and its multiples is:

12345679 x 9 = 111111111

12345679 x 18 = 222222222

12345679 x 27 = 333333333

So on & finally:

12345679 x 81 = 999999999

And there are many more wonderful mathematical observations and tricks with cards and coins involving number 9.

As far as I know, this doesn’t happen with any of the other nine digits from 0 to 8. So 9 is certainly unique and history tells us it is important and lucky. I hope there are no exceptions and it is lucky for all.
